Brazos Spinners & Weavers Guild

Welcome to the Brazos Spinners & Weavers Guild.   We are a group of like-minded fiber enthusiasts of wide-ranging expertise, interests and ages.  We spin on various spindles and wheels, we weave on and off looms, we felt, and we dye.  We create beauty and function in an abundance of techniques.  We encourage learning and outreach within our group but also with the general public.

The Guild was established and has been active since 1976. Brazos Spinners & Weavers Guild is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. We have had the pleasure and responsibility of hosting the state guild’s (Contemporary Handweavers of Texas) conference on two occasions.

The Brazos Spinners and Weavers Guild holds their meetings  on the first Saturday of each month from September-May.  Meetings run from 10am -12noon at the guild house – Intersections.  All interested parties are welcome.  Guild meetings typically consist of a program of interest to fiber enthusiasts, a short business meeting, and then show-and-tell by members. The programs consist of either a hands-on project or a short talk  by a knowledgeable guest

Guild membership is open to people of all skill levels who share our interests, or anyone who simply wants to increase their understanding and appreciation of spinning, weaving, and other fiber arts. Membership fee is $20.00 per year, which covers the costs of monthly programs.

Our public outreach works in two ways: primarily, we offer free workshops which introduce the public through a wide variety of textile and fiber arts techniques and hands-on instruction to various age groups. More advanced techniques are taught in more formal classes. Some of these are single classes for specific techniques and others are a series of classes to cover a topic in greater hands-on detail.

Secondarily, we demonstrate our spinning and weaving skills at many public events. These include Art Step & First Friday in Downtown Bryan, Texas Independence at Washington-on-the-Brazos & Independence, Boonville Days at the Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History, the Brazos Historical Society 4th of July celebration at Heritage Park, The Cotton Gin Festival in Burton, Fanthorpe Inn, Millican Reserve and the Farmers Market in Downtown Bryan. We have given lectures at the Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History and the Stark Gallery at Texas A&M University. We have assisted with the development and curation of exhibits at the Brazos Valley Museum of Natural History and the Stark Gallery. We have given tours of our facility to groups from Houston and Austin.

INTERSECTIONS TLC (more information below) houses the guild’s library and equipment, which are available to guild members during their working/open hours.  INTERSECTIONS TLC serves as guild house for the BSWG – providing a space for meetings, special workshops and social interaction.  The guild is also an affiliate of the Arts Council of the Brazos Valley and the Brazos Chamber of Commerce, providing promotion, advertising and possibilities of grant monies for special events.

INTERSECTIONS Textile Learning Center & Gallery

Was established in August 2013 as a ‘brick & mortar’ location for local (Brazos Valley) spinners, weavers and other fiber artists.

This is their space to share their fiber art knowledge and skills with the public through teaching, demonstrating, exhibiting and selling their work. INTERSECTIONS sells locally handcrafted wearable textiles (scarves & shawls), home goods (towels, placemats & rugs), accessories (jewelry & purses) and fiber art (wall hangings & 3-D art pieces).

We also serve as a gallery space to display, showcase and sell works by local textile and fiber artists who are members of INTERSECTIONS. These artists are also our workshop and class instructors, and demonstrators at cultural events.

All of our artists do custom orders and commissioned work. Not only can you get unique gifts and fiber art work you can have something crafted just for you. Stop by any day we are open and talk to our artists. Together we can bring luxurious custom fiber art into your life!

Intersections Learning Center & Gallery is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.

Testimonials

Intersections is an important resource in the Brazos Valley community. It adds richness and texture by bringing fiber art forms here that we would not get any other way. For myself, I have learned how to felt material, how to paint on silk, how to weave different materials, how to make cords and to integrate them together, how to make lovely objects from raffia, and much more. In each case the class was taught by an expert who was so personable and knowledgeable that the learning was not only easy but a pleasure. This kind of outreach to our community not only furthers knowledge and appreciation of the arts but also improves our quality of life, making our community a better place to live. — Susan Irza – Retiree

Great place, lovely people, eager to explore everything fibre and textiles and ever ready to teach….and yeah their gift store is one of the best I have ever come across with beautiful handmade/handwoven gifts. — Neeli Titlee – Novato CA

I LOVE everything about this wonderful place. The weaver’s/artist’s work is exceptional. I believe I have bought 7 pieces (mostly scarves) for myself as well as many other gift items. What’s available for purchase is always stunning. I receive compliments and questions daily on the pieces I wear. A gem of a find! Get over there! — Red Rocks Toffee Company Ltd., Morrison CO
